Columbia is located in Howard County, Maryland. It's a suburb of Baltimore and to some degree, Washington DC, also. The city was established in 1967 as a planned community made up of ten self-contained villages. James Rouse developed Columbia based upon his idea that this community could enhance its residents' quality of life by eliminating the inconveniences of current subdivision design. As the most populated census-designated places in Maryland, the population of Columbia today is over 97,000.
Columbia and its sister city of Ellicott City use thoughtful and purposeful zoning to protect their mixture of country charm and comfort. To add to its appeal, about one-third of Columbia has been set aside as open space which offers residents the opportunity to get away from it all. It has a 950-acre nature preserve as well as a skateboard park and three lakes.
EDUCATION
The original plan for Columbia was for school-age children to attend schools which were located in their own village, and all students were to receive the same high-quality education. The Columbia public schools are run by the Howard County Public School System. Students in this school system consistently rank among the state’s highest in student performance on the Maryland School Assessments, scoring well above the national average on standardized tests. More than 90% of high school graduates from this district continue their education past high school.
AWARD WINNING COMMUNITY
